The English Premier League is considered one of, if not the best football leagues in the world and has continued to attract some of the best footballers that have ever graced the pitch.

To celebrate the Premier League turning 30 years old this month, we’ve put together 10 fun facts about the league that you may not know.

1. Manchester United Won The First Ever Premier League Season

The Premier League was created in 1992 and replaced the old First Division. The league was originally known as the FA Premier League and the first ever season was won by Manchester United who topped the table by 10 points.

2. Brian Deane Scored The First Ever Goal In The Premier League

The first ever Premier League goal was scored by Sheffield United’s Brian Deane.

The goal came after just 5 minutes of play in Sheffield United’s 2-1 win over Manchester United who went on to win the league.

3. Manchester United Hold The Record For The Most Premier League Titles

Only 7 different teams have won the Premier League in the 30 years it has been running. Manchester United claimed 13 of those titles, more than any other club.

Local rivals Manchester City have won the Premier League title 6 times. Five of which have come in the last six years.

4. The Most Points Collected In A Single Season Is 100

Manchester City have been a dominant force in the Premier League in recent seasons and they proved that in 2017/18 when they picked up the most points ever in a single season.

Throughout their 38 games, they collected 100 points from 32 wins, 4 draws and just 2 defeats.

5. The Fewest Points Collected In A Single Season Is 11

Derby County collected the fewest points recorded in any Premier League season – A stat no club wants to have hanging over their head.

In the 2007/08 season, Derby won just 1 of their 38 league games. Those 3 points coupled with a single point from each of their eight draws means that they finished their season rock bottom of the table with just 11 points.

Birmingham finished second bottom that season having collected 35 points. More than three times more than Derby.

6. Only Six Teams Have Never Been Relegated

Only six teams have managed to remain in the Premier League throughout its 30 year existence.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Everton are the only clubs never to have been relegated.

7. Alan Shearer Is The Premier League’s Top Scorer

Alan Shearer is the league’s all time to goalscorer.

Shearer scored a total of 260 goals in 441 league appearances during his career at Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United and picked up 3 Golden Boot awards.

Wayne Rooney is the Premier League’s second top goalscorer with 208 goals for Everton and Manchester United.

8. Petr Cech Has Kept The Most Clean Sheets In The Premier League

Petr Cech made 443 Premier League appearances for Arsenal and Chelsea and goes down in history as being the goalkeeper who kept the most clean sheets.

Cech managed to keep the ball out of his net in 202 of the 443 league games he played in the English top flight which is an impressive 45.6% of games.

9. Gareth Barry Has Made The Most Appearances In The Premier League

As well as playing for England, Gareth Barry made 653 appearances in the Premier League for Aston Villa, Manchester City, Everton and West Brom – More than any other player in history.

Ryan Giggs made 632 appearances during his career and Frank Lampard 609.

10. 50 Different Teams Have Featured In The Premier League

Throughout the 30 years that the Premier League has been in existence, 50 clubs have featured in the top-flight.

Forty-eight of those clubs are based in England and two from Wales (Cardiff City & Swansea City).
